Understand how a rate reset changes the payment, remaining term and repayment schedule before comparing an alternative loan.
RBI provides FAQs on floating-rate EMI-based personal loans, including disclosure of the effects of rate resets.
Why it matters
Ask your lender for a dated repayment schedule and the options applicable to your product. Compare the same outstanding principal and remaining tenure before assessing a balance transfer. Include the applicable costs and your expected holding period. A lower monthly payment achieved by a longer repayment period should be evaluated separately from a genuine reduction in total cost.
Read the revised repayment schedule
A rate change can alter the instalment, the remaining term, or both. Ask for the benchmark, spread, reset date and effective rate on your account, together with the outstanding principal. Compare the earlier and revised schedules using the same statement date so payments made between the two do not confuse the calculation.
RBI’s borrower FAQ describes communications on changes in EMI or tenure and quarterly information including principal and interest recovered, EMI, instalments remaining and annualised interest rate. Use these fields to frame a written request to your lender.
Compare options using a consistent example
Suppose two offers quote the same principal but different tenures. The offer with a smaller monthly payment may run for longer. Put the remaining number of payments, recurring charges and switching costs beside the EMI before deciding which fits your household budget. This is a comparison method, not a current rate quote.
The RBI FAQ discusses higher EMI, longer tenure or a combination; a fixed-rate switch where the lender provides that option; and part or full prepayment. Ask which options and disclosed charges apply to your product. Request a written illustration rather than relying on a verbal promise of savings.
Before you decide
Ask the lender for written options. Prepare a HomeHNI loan enquiry without posting account numbers or document scans in the message.
- Obtain the outstanding principal and latest repayment schedule.
- Ask how the benchmark and spread determine the rate.
- Compare options using the same principal and remaining term.
- Keep a monthly cash-flow buffer when choosing a payment.
